Jonathan Sweet
Washington State University | Sweet Marching Band Consulting and Design
Dr. Jon Sweet is the Director of Athletic Bands and Associate Director of Bands at Washington State University (WSU), where he leads the Cougar Marching Band and conducts the Symphonic Band. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Kentucky (2019), a Master of Music in Wind Band Conducting from Stephen F. Austin State University (2013), and a Bachelor of Music Education from Abilene Christian University (2004).
An active figure in the marching band pageantry arts, Dr. Sweet has designed over 300 shows and adjudicates marching bands nationwide. His designs have been featured at major high school competitions, including Bands of America Regionals, Super Regionals, Grand Nationals, and State Marching Contests, as well as in major college football conferences such as the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, WAC, Sun Belt, and Conference USA. His extensive experience and keen sense of detail have established him as one of the top drill writers in the country.
In addition to his role at WSU, Dr. Sweet owns and operates Sweet Marching, a company dedicated to creating solutions for music educators in instrumental education, assisting both marching and concert ensembles. Through Sweet Marching, he offers services such as program design and coordination, drill design, adjudication, leadership training, clinics, and mentorship.
Beyond his work in the marching arts, Dr. Sweet is also an accomplished wind band conductor, regularly leading wind ensembles and honor concert bands across the country. He is deeply committed to the advancement of new music and has actively collaborated on commissioning projects to expand the repertoire for both concert and marching ensembles.
Before joining WSU, Dr. Sweet served as the Associate Director of the “All-American” Marching Band, where he was the primary drill designer, and as the Assistant Director of Bands at Purdue University. He also served as a public school director in Texas for 11 years.
Throughout his career, Dr. Sweet has been committed to enhancing the quality and effectiveness of both marching and concert band performances across the United States. His expertise and dedication continue to influence and inspire the music education and marching arts communities.
