At the invitation of BLUME (Building Leaders Using Music Education) president Janet Anthony, Dr. Milt Allen of The Music Guerrilla and Jupiter Artist/Educational Clinician went to Haiti to assist in teaching at 2 music camps and to explore the possibility of further partnerships.
During the 11-day trip from July 2-12, Dr. Allen attended the Cemuchca Community School camp in Terrier Rouge, then the Holy Trinity camp in the mountains at Cange. Originally intending to assist and advise, his role quickly expanded to include conducting the bands, guest conducting the Cemuchca Orchestra, teaching a music pedagogy classes, conducting classes and giving special presentations in several areas, all in addition to working with individual students when not in class. While orchestra has a solid foothold throughout Haiti, the band movement is needing assistance as it re-establishes itself. In addition, providing much sough-after instruction to teachers is of paramount importance. The trip was a terrific experience for all involved and has laid groundwork for future visits and collaboration. There is much work and great need in Haiti, including materials, equipment, instruments and instruction. The Music Guerrilla is looking forward to being involved and assisting in Haiti's instrumental/music education future. “It was so great that to have Jupiter make such much needed donations of both accessories and shirts” states Allen. “Once again, Jupiter has made a difference in the musical - and personal - lives of others less fortunate, but no less deserving.”
“Milt Allen has such a strong passion to see that every child has access to quality music that we were pleased to help him bring the students in Haiti some much needed accessories”, says Artist and Education Relations Manager Rick DeJonge. “Working with Dr. Allen allows us as a company to find new regions to support.”
