The purpose of the John Philip Sousa Foundation National Young Artists Solo Competition is to identify, recognize, and honor outstanding high school musicians who demonstrate a significantly high standard of excellence in performance.

Criteria:
  • The NYASC is open to high school students who will be seniors in the fall of 2016.
  • The student must be enrolled as a full-time member of their school’s band or orchestra program.

Prize:
  • $1000.00 scholarship, sponsored by Jupiter Band Instruments, will be presented to the winner if entering college as a music major.
  • The winner will have the opportunity to perform a solo work with a major university or military band.
  • Jupiter Band Instruments will support all expenses associated with the winner’s solo performance.

Process:
  • Complete an application. Click Here to view and save a PDF or the application. The application can also be found at www.sousafoundation.net.
  • Students should perform two contrasting movements of a concerto--or a work of similar difficulty--with an original or transcribed band accompaniment. The performance must be accompanied by piano.
  • Submit a video recording of an un-edited performance via a private YouTube channel.
  • The deadline for application and video submissions is May 13, 2016.

  1. Complete the NTASC application. Mail the completed application and $25.00 participation fee to the address below. Make checks payable to the John Philip Sousa Foundation.

  2. Video record yourself performing with piano accompaniment. The video should be unedited, the only breaks occurring between movements. Be aware that you might need to upload the video in 2 segments if the file size is too large for one. See #3.
  3. Create a personal YouTube channel and upload your video performance. If you need help creating a personal YouTube channel, please visit the website below.

ABOUT THE JOHN PHILIP SOUSA FOUNDATION
The John Philip Sousa Foundation is a publicly sponsored educational foundation organized for the purpose of sponsoring and administering projects contributing to the excellence of bands and band music throughout the world. The foundation is governed by the executive committee, which receives suggestions, advice, and input from the board of directors and the executive board. Projects of a special nature related to the interests of the several organizations are coordinated with these groups for their specific input. No officer of the Foundation or committee member, excepting the attorney and the tax accountant, receive any salary or compensation for services.
