TBA Student Melody Competition



The 2017 Texas Bandmasters Association Student Melody Competition is a composition competition for Texas band students in grades 6–12 during the 2016–2017 school year. The 16 bar composition entries will be judged on originality, creativity, phrasing, and overall musicality.

The winning melody will be used as thematic material for a wind ensemble piece to be premiered on Thursday, July 20th by the USAF Band of the West as part of the 2017 Texas Bandmasters Association Convention.

The winning composer along with one parent or guardian and the band director will be brought to San Antonio and stay at the Marriott Riverwalk for 3 nights from July 20–23 to attend the TBA convention and be a part of the premiere.

The TBA Student Melody Competition is sponsored by the KHS America Academic Alliance.


 



Composer Eligibility

  • Students must reside in the state of Texas.
  • Students must be in grades 6-12 during the 2016-17 school year at the time of submission.
  • Students must be enrolled in their school band program.
  • Students must be legal US citizens.
  • Employees of KHS America and KHS America's affiliates, the immediate families of such employees (employees' parents, siblings, children and spouses) and members of the same household of such employees are not eligible to enter the Competition.

Composition Guidelines

  • An original work of a single melody composed after January 1, 2017
  • All entries submitted must be original melodies and shall not infringe any copyrights or any other rights of any third parties
  • Any work submitted for two or more voices will not be accepted
  • Melody must be 16 measures long
  • Score must contain tempo marking, time signature, and key signature (if needed)
  • Score must contain a title, composer's name and contact information
  • Score may be handwritten or extracted from notation software

Submission Process [THE DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED!]

  • The submission period is from February 1, 2017 – March 31, 2017 April 14, 2017.
  • Score must be submitted in either a JPG or PDF format
  • Only one composition entry per person will be accepted
  • Entry Form must be filled out completely and submitted as a JPG or PDF (download Entry Form)
  • Parent or legal Guardian and Band Director must sign Entry Form
  • Score and Entry Form must be emailed to info.usa@khsmusic.com by 11:59 PM CST on March 31 April 14, 2017
  • Any score submitted in any other formats or past the March 31 April 14 deadline will not be accepted

Judging Process

  • Entries will be screened by a committee who will select the finalists, and the finalists will be sent to the judges who will select the winner. The judging committee consists of professional composers and music educators and entries will be judged on originality, creativity, phrasing, and overall likeability.
  • Winner will be announced on May 1, 2017. Jupiter will post the results on its website and social channels and will notify entrants by email that results are posted. Composer is responsible for providing up-to-date and correct email addresses to Jupiter. Jupiter is not responsible for entrant's non-receipt of any Jupiter emails for any reason, including but not limited to, server or email malfunctions.
  • Composer acknowledges that the melody entered may be distributed to judges who will be selecting the winner, and composer agrees to release, indemnify, and hold KHS America Inc. and judges harmless for liability, damages, or claims for injury or loss to any person or property relating to, in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, participation in Jupiter National Student Melody Competition.

Awards

  • Winning melody will be used as thematic material for a wind ensemble piece to be premiered on Friday, July 21, 2017 as part of the Texas Bandmasters Association Annual Convention.
  • The composer retains the rights to the melody only and not the wind ensemble music. The wind ensemble work will not be published but may be used for educational purposes only.
  • Winning composer along with one parent or guardian will be brought to San Antonio and stay at the Marriott Riverwalk for 3 nights from July 20-23 to attend the TBA Convention and be a part of the premiere. This prize package is valued at $1,750.
  • Winning composer will receive a plaque along with a copy of the wind ensemble score. This prize is valued at $50.
  • Director from the school of the winning student will brought to San Antonio and stay at the Marriott Riverwalk for 3 nights from July 20-23 to attend the TBA Convention. This package is valued at $1,000.

By entering, entrant and/or their parents or legal guardian (if such entrant is a minor) agree to accept and be bound by the decisions of the judges which are final and binding in all matters. Entrant agrees to be bound by all terms of these Official Rules and Regulations as established herein.
