Willem Moolenbeek borrowed a saxophone from a friend when he was a student and soon encountered an article in a magazine by the great Canadian saxophonist Paul Brodie. He called Paul with the intention of having a few lessons and then found himself deeply involved in the study of the instrument and continued his lessons with the master for over 5 years as well as being his teaching assistant. Paul encouraged him to perform and record.

He has performed with orchestras, bands, choirs and string ensembles. Over 20 compositions and arrangements have been written for him including works with piano, strings, orchestras and choirs. He writes for music publications and continues to teach on two university faculties. He now teaches students of his students.

He has premiered pieces at World Saxophone Congresses, is broadcast on radio and internet and has been a clinician for Jupiter saxophones since 2007.
